The blue whale, the largest animal on Earth, doesn’t have teeth at all! Instead, it uses baleen plates—thin, flexible strips made of keratin—to filter tiny krill from seawater. While blue whales belong to the baleen whale group, other whales like the sperm whale fall under the toothed whale category and do have actual teeth. Baleen whales can have up to 270–395 baleen plates hanging from each side of the upper jaw, which act like a giant natural sieve.
